Dal Burtchaell, a Southern Folk Potter born and raised in Gillsville, Georgia, has a rich background in the pottery field, having worked his way up from clay preparation to kiln stacking and firing ware. In his early years, he focused on creating functional pottery such as unglazed flower pots, strawberry pots, and outdoor planters. However, seeking a creative outlet, Dal shifted to producing unique items like jugs, churns, and face jugs, showcasing his artistic talents. His distinctive style is evident in large face jugs with whimsical eyes and varied facial expressions, some appearing to enjoy a stogie and featuring a unique glaze combination of solid color followed by tobacco spit over glaze. Dal's expertise extends to crafting stoneware, utilitarian items, urns, and vases, with his larger pieces reaching up to 20 gallons, making him a highly collected Southern Folk Artist known for his custom-mixed and unique glaze recipes.
Encompassing a number of traditional face jug aspects, the devil character, a rich red glaze, and an expressive face, his Horned Red Devil Face Jug has all the hallmarks of the best of the Southern art. The jug measures 10" tall by 5.5" wide, and its signed on the bottom.
