Rev. Howard Finster – Desert Taxi, 1990
A charming and spirited example of American folk art by the legendary Reverend Howard Finster (1916–2001), this hand-painted wood sculpture titled Desert Taxi features a stylized camel rendered in Finster’s iconic, playful style. Part of his early Pet for Kids series, the piece is vibrantly painted and inscribed with his signature bird logo, inspirational text, and trademark numbering system.
Dated January 2, 1990 and marked item number 13.000.117—Finster’s way of documenting this as the 13,117th work in his prolific output—the sculpture is signed front and back in his distinctive hand. As with much of Finster’s work, Desert Taxi blends whimsy, faith, and vision, turning a simple folk form into a joyful spiritual artifact.
