Howard Finster, The Abigrilla, 1989
Black-and-white offset lithograph on paper, 15 x 11 inches (sight).
This print is one of Howard Finster’s visionary animal images, created during a prolific period in the late 1980s when he numbered each work sequentially and inscribed them with time and date of completion. This example is marked “10.000.115 Works of our time / 11:08 AM Feb-5-1989.”
The Abigrilla belongs to Finster’s series of devotional drawings and prints in which he populated animals into heavenly landscapes filled with scripture and cosmic imagery. Here, the central horned figure is surrounded by text, stars, birds, and floating creatures, with the artist’s familiar declarations: “I love all of God’s wonderful animals and I love you all to.”
Finster (1916–2001), often called “the grandfather of Southern folk art,” rose to national attention in the 1980s for his hand-painted signs, cutouts, and his Paradise Garden in Georgia. His work is represented in major collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the American Visionary Art Museum.
This print captures his unique ability to merge preaching, imagination, and drawing into a single, densely layered vision.
