Playful and unmistakably postmodern, this pair of ceramic head-form salt and pepper shakers carries the bold graphic presence and sly humor that defined late twentieth century design.
Handmade by New Zealand ceramicist Brendan Adams and signed “B. Adams NZ,” each piece shows his signature blend of sculptural simplicity, vivid surface treatment, and a Memphis-inflected approach to form. The stylized faces flatten into near-architectural profiles, with rhythmic painted details that animate the minimal geometry. Despite their modest scale, they read as sculptural objects as much as functional tableware.
Adams’s work from this period reflects a wider international move toward graphic, playful ceramics that blurred the boundaries between art, craft, and design. This set stands out for its character, its clarity of silhouette, and its perfect balance of whimsy and precision.
