Billy Ray Hussey Folk Art Pottery Dog in the Style of Staffordshire

$850.00

Figural pottery dog by North Carolina folk potter Billy Ray Hussey, modeled after the iconic Staffordshire spaniels produced in 19th-century England. Hand-formed and glazed in Hussey's distinctive style, the sculpture balances the symmetry and formality of traditional Staffordshire figures with the expressive character and robust modeling that define his work. Signed and stamped "BH." 9 x 5.5 x 65 inches

Raised in Seagrove, North Carolina, Hussey learned pottery from his great-uncle, master potter M.L. Owens, and established his own studio in 1988. While he initially became known for face jugs, by the early 1990s he had shifted his focus to figural animals, including lions, dogs, bears, and horses. Drawing inspiration from historic Staffordshire ceramics, Hussey reinterprets these familiar forms through the lens of Southern folk pottery, creating works that are both deeply rooted in tradition and distinctly his own.

Hussey's work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Mint Museum, and the North Carolina Museum of History, among other institutions, and has become an important example of contemporary Southern folk ceramics.
