Billy Ray Hussey Folk Art Pottery Dog in the Style of Staffordshire

Raised in Seagrove, North Carolina, Hussey learned pottery from his great-uncle, master potter M.L. Owens, and established his own studio in 1988. While he initially became known for face jugs, by the early 1990s he had shifted his focus to figural animals, including lions, dogs, bears, and horses. Drawing inspiration from historic Staffordshire ceramics, Hussey reinterprets these familiar forms through the lens of Southern folk pottery, creating works that are both deeply rooted in tradition and distinctly his own.

Hussey's work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Mint Museum, and the North Carolina Museum of History, among other institutions, and has become an important example of contemporary Southern folk ceramics.
